This is a novel that draws the reader into an examination of the vices and virtues of freedom itself. The novel examines the increasingly foolish choices, both on a personal and on a national scale that have emerged thanks to our so-called freedom ( extramarital affairs, the war in Iraq, the election of a President); shows that the less freedom we actually have in our lives, the more we cling to the smallest and least consequential of personal liberties (how dare some politician make me immunize my child against small pox!); and, ultimately, questions how much freedom we really ever had to begin with. A very timely- and nearly tragic- book.
