Adam Bede is a novel that takes place in Colonial England during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, but the issues considered remain extremely relevant. The story is simple but emotionally moving. The characters are complex, well-developed, and believable such that I could relate in some way to all of them. Oh, and the writing is simply beautiful.

It provides insight into love, spirituality, religion, simple living, childhood, beauty, society, among other topics.
