by Jack Kerouac, Aram Saroyan
I have in the past two months or so, perhaps sufferd a "reading slump" where by, I have not read and with this ever lasting bell ringing in my head i decided to but a stop to this!
I asked my farther a man of true litrearture knowlodge and wisdom a book he would reccomed that we have in the house right now (and we have hundreds of books in this house) and he pulled "Big Sur" off the shelves and said "now this is a book i think you'd enjoy" and by golly, jolly, wolly he was right! I read the blur in the back of the book and instantley thought "I am going to enjoy this book!".
The stroy is written in an novel/autobiographical style, apprantly the way most of Jack Kerouac novels or written. The story is based on Jack Dulzos who have'n written 10 cirtically and comerically succesfull novels, making a budle of money and don of admires is trying to gain his "insanity" from a drinking, smoking and partying to do this at the start of the novel he retreats to desolate area in Calfornia Big Sur, to try and construct and control is own peace of mind.
After three weeks of sobeirty, freedom, nature, poetery, feeding animals, sleeping outside, Jack Duluoz suffers a moment of panic and quicly rushes back to the city, only to find out his beloved cat "tyke" (whom he loves like a brother) has died. From here Jack suffres constant downhill battle with his demons and goes on drinking run of double bourbouns, manhattnas, scoth and wine! Which eventually lead to gritty, brutley open battle with his own insanity, a man clearly infautataed with talent, detroyed by perception! The story will take you on roller-coaster battle of good v evil, fame v freedom, money v frienship, jealousy v love and most impeciabley teeth-ranching battle of all mind v soul.
Big Sur has rapidly, made me a fan of Jack Kerouac's work and having got this message across pretty cleat to santa claus as found me been given predomanatly his novels for christmas "the road" (which i have read first chapter of just today) and "the subterreanes",all my subtle brain can say, at this late hour of night is, if there anyhting like Big Sur I am sure to be a fan! I recomend this book with all my sorrow and love to you all.
