I was getting nervous about this book. I had selected it for my book club and before I started reading, more then half the woman in the club returned the book-unfinished and declared that they hated it. I started reading with caution. Yes it starts a bit slow but I loved it. Franzen has one of the best grasps of the human psyche I have ever read. After reading this I felt that I knew these people and inspite of their flaws, liked them, even loved them. My heart bled for Walter when he found himself in the pocket of Big Coal. Patty's well meaning but destructive love of her son and the repete of her despised childhood onto your daughter is almost to painful to read. But read I must because I was so involved with the lives of the characters. What a great study of the family and human frailties
