really liked it
bookshelves: religious

I like that Milton chooses the temptations of Christ, rather than the crucifixion or the nativity, as the site of paradise's great victory. The direct confrontation between Satan and Christ as well as the Lord's embarkation on his active ministry make the stakes as well as the scenario analogous to Eve's temptation. Too bad people read Lost but not Regained because the dramatic staging is just as jaw-dropping and the debates just as critical. And the Classical references finally make sense because the Roman Empire actually exists this time.
