Ooh, this was so good! Franklin writes a beautifully told, well-written, evocative story about two boys, one white, one black, in rural Mississippi, whose lives are touched by tragedy, fate, and redemption. The way he tells the story, inter-cutting between the 70s when the boys, unlikely friends, were adolescents, to present day where Larry and Silas are connected by the thinnest of threads, Franklin keeps the narrative tension crackling. I cared about these characters and wanted to see all the things that had been broken put aright again. Uniquely told, wonderfully written characters, honest dialogue--just a wonderful end-of-the-year read!
