Emma-Jean Lazarus is one of those people who is very smart intellectually but socially she is out of touch with her classmates. Her father who passed away two years ago was a mathematician who was very smart and very much loved by his students. Emma-Jean follows in his footsteps except for the much loved part. Emma-Jean is confused by her classmates and their messy life problems and for the most part stays away from them or ignores them. One day, though, she sees Colleen in the bathroom crying and decides to fix what is making Colleen upset. Slowly Emma-Jean gets involved in her classmates problems and her life becomes more messy and unsure.

Colleen wants to be liked by everyone and takes things way too personally. She too starts a journey because of the actions that Emma-Jean takes that helps her see the world in a new way as well.
