Well, let's just say I will be checking Amazon every day waiting for part 2 to be released. This is one of those books that leaves you desperate for more, gives you just enough so you're never bored but always manages to maintain mystery and tension. I found myself deeply attached to the wonderful array of characters and wanted more than anything that they would all make it out of the maze alive. I was pleasantly surprised by the development of Chuck's character; at first I imagined he would simply be an annoying throwaway sidekick but he morphed into a lovable hero and an important symbol of hope.
This is a gripping tale of hope against the odds but there is also something much deeper going on. This novel is hard to categorise, but it does in many ways fit the science fiction genre. It keeps you guessing right to the very end, offers you momentary relief at the protagonist's success and then drops another horrific bombshell. It's a very original idea and I'm greatly anticipating where the author will take our characters next.
I was surprised by the way the author never bores the reader when the boys' day to day lives prove to be very repetitive, but the tension never drops, neither does the feeling that something is waiting just around every corner. Something bad. For this, it's quite a frightening book, especially when you consider it as a reality. It's the kind of concept that you think can never happen in real life, but then that's exactly what the boys thought beforehand.
Highly original and clever. I would recommend this book to everyone of all ages.
