Accurate, well-researched. A brilliant alternate take on the life of the Dowager Empress. Heavier on history and politics than its sequel, but perfectly balanced against the apparently fictional stories of the characters. I actually developed an interest in Chinese history (especially towards the end of the Qing Dynasty) after reading this.

(I read this so many times that I bought the Spanish translation when I was in sixth-form, to help me study the language better. :D)
