Any book about Montaigne combines both his life and his writing -- and this book does it well. This book also tempts its reader to simply put it down and pick up Montaigne's Essays. But it is not always due to the interest aroused in the subject matter. It is also due to the unfortunate few times that Montaigne is allowed to speak with his own words at any length in this book.
