I never had the opportunity to ride on a stagecoach, but through Phyllis Reynold Turner's book EMILY'S FORTUNE, I feel like I did. Poor Emily becomes an orphan early in the book. Her closest relative is her horrible uncle with whom she does not want to live. Avoiding the orphan society, three concerned ladies who have an impact on Emily throughout the book, put her on a train bound for her aunt out west. Emily, accompanied by her best friend, Rufus the turtle, experiences many firsts on this journey.
Her adventure continues when she must switch to a stagecoach for the remainder of her trip. She meets an experienced orphan boy who seems to take her under his wing until her hated uncle shows up. From there, the excitement continues.
