Another excellent book for children ages 8-12, particularly boys. I don't remember hearing this story before. It's about a Lieutenant in the US Air Force who is part of the Berlin Airlift bringing food and coal to the people of West Berlin. When he comes in contact with a group of children he gives them the only thing he has--two sticks of gum. He says that watching them share the 2 pieces amongst them changed his life forever. He begins to organize candy drops--wrapping chocolate bars up and tying them to little parachutes made from hankerchiefs then dropping them from his plane. It is a touching story that brought tears to my eyes several times. I think it provides a wonderful opportunity to talk to children about war, the people, compassion, and hardship.
