I won't give this stars because I've only read two stories by Willa Cather. But those stories were great.
One is called "Paul's Case." It's been said Paul is a precursor to Holden Caulfied. It is a story waiting for a movie adaptation. (Nobody's ever filmed CATCHER IN THE RYE, either. Salinger won't let 'em. Good for him. He's showing us the power of books. His book stands entirely on its own.)
I have forgotten the title of the other story I'm thinking of, but it involves the funeral of somebody the main character knew long before. It is written with economy and stoicism.

Kirk "Paul's Case" is one of my favorite stories of all time, Fred. You're exactly right aboutit being a precursor to CATCHER. It was also a big influence on Fitzgerald's THIS SIDE OF PARADISE. What I love about it is how the story allow you your ambivalence toward Paul---I find myself empathizing with him but also disapproving of his actions. I think the best coming-of-age stuff really emphasizes this ambivalence; I feel it when I read both CATCHER but also INTO THE WILD, too. It's almost like you read these works as a teenager and an adult simultaneously.

Anyway, nice review.... I'll have to look up that other story you mention; the title fails me at 6:37 a.m....

Frederick I have not only remembered the title of the other story, I'm posting a link to an e-text of it. The story is called "The Sculptor's Funeral."
