The Stone Key by Isobelle Carmody

Book 5 of the Obernewtyn Chronicles. YA fantasy. (Is it still YA? Difficult to tell.) On a trip to Sutrium, Elspeth is captured by an old enemy, and finds herself drawn into the heart of the violent and controlling Herder faction. And I'd like to write more, but would possibly be lynched by fans for spoiling the plot. SO. THINGS HAPPEN. Oh yes, they do.

Did anybody miss the jumping up and down? So. I have absolutely no capacity to judge this book rationally. But I didn't like The Keeping Place much, and I liked this a lot, so make of that what you will. I also made myself faint and headachy and a bit sick reading it nonstop over two days.

Elspeth has mellowed as she gets older, hasn't she? She still calls herself prickly and distant, but in her scenes with Maruman you can see how much better at dealing with emotions than him she is, when they used to be much the same.

Maybe I'll write a better review later, when I've got some distance, and there's no longer the spoiler fear.

Celia Powell Oh, thank you for not spoiling - I am halfway through, in the plague bit. Can't wait to discuss when I'm finished. Am really trying to read reasonably slowly and draw it out :-) I really like the more mellow Elspeth.

katie I haven't quite finished this yet but I'm already dying to read/talk about it! So, uh, I'm glad someone on GR has reviewed. :)

SPOILERS!!

I love seeing Elspeth's awareness of how prickly and aloof she seems, and how lonely it makes her feel. Now that makes me sound sadistic, but anyway! Her meeting with Brydda almost broke my heart, but then I got to the bits at the Beforetime ruins (and on the journey) where she's noticing all the little tendernesses between them, and ohhhh. :(

You have far more self control than me, then :-) I haven't read a book like that, barely looking up except to eat and sleep, in very long time.

I like that too - although I have to admit, her "I have bad social skills because I'm not an Empath" sentiment kind of made me snicker. My darling Elf. Of course you would be the people's queen if only you had that one last Talent ...
