Jonas - Breed Bureau Council head... of Leo & Ellizabeth's sperm/egg, but additional genetic altering to make him a breeder - breeder of what the scientists hoped would be the perfect killing machine... manipulator - in previous books he has 'forced' the mating between some of his enforcers, including his sister & their mates - unemotional - conflicted with Leo & Dr. Elizabeth as he is angry they hadn't rescued him & his sister where they had rescued others of thier 'children', and because he did not feel their acceptance of him even now...

Rachel - pregnant, abandoned by her rich boyfriend in Switzerland without money or passport, pressured by American ambassador for sex for return to US - calls Callen's wife, meritus, who rescues her... but Meritus had her tested (saying it was to ensure no illness coming into Sanctuary) and found her to be mate of Jonas... so Meritus assigned Rachel to be his assistant...

Rachel knows she is attracted to Jonas, but supresses her feelings... Jonas knows she is his mate, but he will not claim her because he does not want his 'breeding genes' to cause an abomination where she would come to hate him.. Rachel stands up to him, forcing him to accept her abilities and help as his assistant... he bonds with her unborn baby - the baby responding to his voice - his senses tell him.


and two months after the baby is born, an excouncil scientist that Jonas is trying to entrap kidnaps Rachel's baby to force her to retrieve thae papers from Jonas' office - and at the same time, knowing she & the baby are 'breed mate compatible' injects the baby with something... to be discovered in another book.

Jonas and his team rescues the baby, but the scientist escapes... so Jonas takes Rachel and the baby to Sanctuary for safety - and to live with him... his need to protect her and claim her is paramount.

Their month in Sanctuary - has Rachel keeping Jonas at arms length - she knows of mating heat, and does not want to 'mate' him without love... Jonas, so new to emotions, maintains his control because he wants her love and acceptance. But Jonas is in pain, and not himself - yet he finds peace in her presence, and the late night feedings/care of the baby...

Rachel comes to a deeper understanding of Jonas - Jonas only gives her the truth, as hard as it is... and they share some semi sexual experiences - where he holds back the hormone (no kissing - a condom)... and when she realizes he won't kiss her, she finally kisses him - and his fully, new true nature... and she accepts him - is stimulated and attracted to him... and bites him back... and has confidence that their child, raised in love, will be a fine person.

for whatever reason - his hormones are slightly different, her self control is greater than the average human... she has pregnacy/breast feeding hormones ... but she does not feel the pain of mating... and even before they were fully mated, the other breeds could smell their mating

her exboyfriend and the scientist try to take the baby - but in the end, the boyfriend is dead, the scientist is captured - and with truth serum that will go into effect in afew months, they will have the truth of what he did to the baby...

and after the mating, Jonas is a kinder ,gentler man; who better understands the value and need for Sanctuary and the strength needed to survive in the world...
