I picked this up after I found out Sanderson was chosen to finish Jordan's Wheel of Time series. Then it sat for awhile in the pile.

Not in the pile anymore. It was great!

The bad guy has ruled for a thousand years with an army and an iron fist. The land he rules is an ash covered world with a red sun. Small nobility (Houses). Everyone else - slaves. A handful of thieves come up with a plan to take down the Lord Ruler and overthrow the nobility.

Each chapter heading is a piece of a journal. I loved the little hints and clues that are in them. At one point I had to go back and just reread all the headings straight through. Nicely done.

Action - Good action, more than a lot of trilogies have in their first book
Magic - Allomancy, is more the ability to manipulate energies than typical wand/spell magic, but there's plenty of it
Creatures - Mistwraiths, Steel Inquistors
Characters - Lots
Cool Places - Ash falls like snow, and mists cover the land at night - it's pretty cool

Jordan's widow chose Sanderson to finish her husband's life work because of this Mistborn trilogy. Now I see why.

On to #2!!!
