Chabon is the most difficult author I've ever read, between the obscure vocabulary and the literary/cultural references I've not been exposed to, I'm never quite sure what he's saying. It requires the use of all my reading strategies to decode the story and at the end, I'm glad I bothered, but am positive that it wasn't a pleasant experience. But I think everyone should read outside their comfort zone once in a while- just don't check out two Chabon books from the library like I did last week!
