** spoiler alert ** Trevor never disappoints. His endings are human, character based and unpredictable. The story of Ellie, a convent child married off to a decent man who killed his wife and child in an accident and still suffers the guilt. In walks Florian, a passive, dabbling son of two artists who have died and willed him the house and Ellie falls in love with him. She suffers from the guilt of that liaison although she cannot stop herself. The ending surprises the reader, but feels earned and the book is touching in the way BROOKLYN by Toibin moves one. Quietly.
