This is my favorite of the Quick novels I've read so far. A complaint I have with Quick's heroines is that they often are 'fiesty' to the point of annoyance. The men are being sexist but in a manner I consider very acceptable for the time and the women often respond with arrogance and running off into danger that just fully justifies the man's opinions. They don't try compromise or at least understand that this is how EVERYONE acts, instead they turn their nose up at the hero and demand he bends over backwards for her. And then he does. It bugs me.

While Prudence definitely isn't immune to this, she isn't arrogant so much as naive. She's presented (in my opinion) as a slightly spoiled, unaware young girl who does many foolish things often in response to people keeping her too sheltered. While some of her actions bother me for the reasons above, it never gets in the way of my enjoyment. I like her strong relationship with the male lead and the tension of the romance with the plot. I highly recommend it.
