It took me a bit to get into this book. First I couldn't get past the idea of it being an alternate take on the events leading up to WWI--all the sci-fi stuff really seemed far-fetched to me and was getting in the way of the story. And, the main male character was whiny and spoiled. But, eventually I was able to settle into the story by not thinking of it as a WWI story, just a story in and of itself. I am now hooked and am looking forward to reading the next book. It ends on a cliff-hanger!

I did find the author's note at the end interesting. It tells about which parts of the story are based on historical facts.
