Irving is a pretty good writer, I just wish he wasn't so melancholy. This book starts out as a comedy, moving at a pretty rapid pace. The protagonist is a unique character, and it's funny to read about how he goes through life. Then, the story slows down and turns into a love story with some characters I didn't really like. It becomes a lot more reflective, and a little weird. Partly due to the main character, the book almost revolves around sexual encounters, and the narrative always seems to be bringing up new ones. This was actually kind of annoying to me, as it seemed to be limiting the book's range. I started reading The Fourth Hand and pegged it as a four star, but after it slowed and repeated and got weird, the book ends up at a 3 star.
