'ship of magic' starts out brutally slow, bouncing among an endless array of characters without launching any kind of plot for quite some time. stick with it, though, because hobb is just taking the time to gently and thoroughly introduce you to all of these complex and intesting people before setting sail with pirate kings, stowaway sailor girls hiding out as boys, revolutionary slaves, and ships that speak to their captains. once the plot starts up, it's every bit as fun as that would imply, but be sure to have the sequel handy: the end is merely an exhale in the action, not any kind of actual resolution.
