The prose is clunky and pedestrian and were it not for its faithful recounting of an historical epoch which I know shamefully little about, I'd have put it down long before finishing. To my great disappointment Jeff Shaara lacks either the literary skill or the faith in his readers, or both, that would allow him to produce a quality work of historical fiction. The emotion, vigor and brilliance of Michael Shaara's 'The Killer Angels' (Jeff's father) is completely lacking in 'Rise to Rebellion' and what we're left with instead is a dry, dull almost textbook accounting of the characters and events leading up to the revolutionary war. I unfortunately learned the hard way that Shaara jr. isn't half the literary talent of his father, and that in future I should remember an authors whole name rather than just the distinctive last name.
