Okay, so... three stars pretty much covers it since I did like it. It wasn’t an ”amazing, never-gonna-forget-this” kind of book but still, I enjoyed it. The writing style got me off guard at the beginning, but when I finally got used to third person it was alright. The first part of the book was a bit weird: Different scenes of Janie’s past to introduce her ‘ability’, how her first experiences were, etc. I think Lisa could have showed us more of Janie’s character, but maybe that’s only because I’m used to strong leads. I still liked Janie, though.
But the other thing that bothered me was, probably, the fact that I come from reading books with complicated plots and twists, and Wake is a very simple book. I must have read it in two or three hours, tops. But well, that’s not its fault, lol :) Yes, it does have an intriguing paranormal element: Getting into people’s dreams is really awesome, depending on the dream of course but still... I was instantly drawn to the premise and all the possibilities. For instance, I loved when Cabel communicated with Janie through his dreams on purpose so that he could say stuff he couldn’t in real life. That was sweet. But really, the “big mystery” to solve in the novel is why her boyfriend lies to her and seems to cheat on her repeatedly (I’m not going to explain or to take this back because I don’t want to spoil it!). There were so many sub-plots that, to me, were much more promising –like Carrie’s dream about her brother or even Caleb’s dream- if they had been developed differently and not solved in the most obvious way. I wouldn’t have minded the main plot as it was if there was a real twist or surprise behind it, but there wasn’t. The solution was just as obvious and simple as the other ones.
However, I did like it :D I know, you must be thinking "Huh? What was that all about, then?, lol. But the truth is that while I love complicated and dark books, I also enjoy reading a 'light' one every now and then, and Wake does have a sweet love story of how a young man and woman struggle to cope with a strange ability, which makes them grow together even in the worst circumstances. The characters were great, though I repeat, I could've used a tiny bit more development.

I keep hearing so many mixed reviews about this book. Some say it's awesome, others say it was terrible. Was it good enough to read the next book in the series?

I know, I have mixed feelings about it myself. It was not amazing at all, but it wasn't terrible either. I mean, it is a pretty plain book to me.. too simple and short for what could have been a really good book, but I think you could enjoy it if you bear that in mind before reading it and not expect something to blow you away. I'll probably read the next book if I'm bored someday, lol.
Fair enough! Maybe I'll give it a shot, but I'm not going to worry if I never do. My to-read list is totally out of control, anyway.
Ha ha that's exactly the attitude you should have with this book. You explained it for me. My TR list is out of control, too. I brought like 20 books in my Kindle to my trip and dont know where to start, lol.
