The author can be a bit long-winded and definitely enjoys the sound of his own voice, but the series this book belongs to ("The Hinges of History") remains one of the more interesting and readable histories of the ancient world. This is the first book in the series that moves out of the ancient world and into the beginning of the modern one and illustrates a lot of the neat connections between the two.
