Me and my annoying lamb puppet have been singing a song about this book for the last couple of hours, but eventually it did end. Thank God.

For awhile there, I was thinking that the end was going to be good, in contrast to the painful first 450 pages. But then the ending ended, but the book did not. It kept going, and going, and going...

This is a decent crime thriller/political intrigue story that is so incredibly bloated with irrelevant detail, bland, unmemorable characters and copious amounts of inane prose and pointless backstory as to be almost unreadable. I am amazed by the number of 4 and 5 star ratings this book received. I really enjoyed the first two but made it through this one through sheer force of will.

And it's not all bad. I'm giving it two stars instead of one, because I did get through it, and it had its moments. Salander's trial, though completely implausible from the perspective of an American who has seen plenty of courtroom scenes on TV and in movies (maybe the Swedish judicial system is very different from ours? Or maybe in real life they follow no rules in court and the organized scenes I've seen on TV are all fabricated? I kind of doubt it.), is quite compelling and satisfying. And there were one or two characters that I liked. The secondary story involving Erika and her little scandal at SMP was interesting.

But mostly... gah. And oh my god, don't get me started on the little "romance" between Blomkvist and Ferguola...

I'm just really glad to finally be done.
