The Iron Duke (Iron Seas, #1)

I put off reading this one for a while because steampunk isn't really my thing, in much the same way that cyberpunk was never really my thing. I mean, sure, I read some William Gibson and Neal Stephenson, and I watched Blade Runner a good dozen times, but I can't shake a certain innate wariness about trendy sub-movements using "punk" as a suffix.
That said, a good book is a good book, and this book is amazing. The world-building is outstanding; Brook has given England a horrifying but coherent alternative history. She has a talent for describing setting: she provides enough detail to let the reader construct a vivid mental image of her characters' surroundings, but not so much that you start having Henry James flashbacks.
Mina is a very appealing heroine. She's smart, loyal, and savvy, but she's no Mary Sue superwoman. Rhys, the titular Iron Duke--well, let's face it. He's one monobrow away from a Geico commercial in a number of his scenes. He's possessive, forceful, and stubborn. I can see why so many readers are divided on the issue of his appeal. His characterization works for me, but this kind of male lead isn't for everyone.
There's a mystery at the heart of this novel; Mina meets the Iron Duke when she's called in to investigate the murder of a man who was killed and dumped on the duke's property. As they seek to uncover the identity of the man and his murderer, they discover evidence of a conspiracy that would put thousands of lives at risk. It's an engaging story, and I found it refreshingly unpredictable.
Brook has me hooked with this series; The Iron Duke is one of my favorite novels of 2010.

lol, sign of a successful marketing campaign! I can't always get that Geico stuff outta the brain. ;)The part you're reading is there mainly to set out some of the historical focus. The bounders are serving sugar-filled confections at the ball, but since the Horde originally took over England via nanoagents smuggled through sugar, the English (understandably) feel strongly about avoiding it.
You move onto the mystery part story very quickly after that, though. When it starts, Mina doesn't even have enough time to change out of her ball gown. You're almost there, I swear!
I really love Rhys as a male lead, but he definitely doesn't have across-the-board appeal. In a lot of his early scenes, it's all about the chase & the acquisition of Mina as a form of property. I like him because, as he gets more and more attached to her emotionally, he works hard to try to figure out how to remove the emotional and practical obstacles that stand in their way--and he actually does have a code of honor, even if it centers around him & those who "belong" to him, in one way or another. He's one determined SOB, lol.
"The chase & the acquisition of Mina as a form of property." <--- My sick, sick mind went to kinky places. Okay. I'll go back to it now(ish). Honestly, I don't know why I lost interest in the set up if it was about sugar. I love sugar. LOL
Love the review Galla. Umhh ok Rhys is an asshole, I'll admit. But he is a pirate who is kindda being force to be a duke, we can't expect a normal courtship between Mina and him! lol. But still I loved how he developed through the book.
And the ball gown part and when Rhys helps her out of her gloves...YES hooked. ;p
I am looking forward to see what Missie thinks. *squeee*

You have to read it Missie, I did and I consider it the best book I read in 2010. I don't usually read books in english, because of my lack of vocabulary (and in here is London Victorian english vocabulary) but I just couldn't put this one down. You will be amazed cause i'ts a wonderful world and a great adventure.

I often wonder how Rhys was so well behaved considering the lack of education in his past. He is like a tammed beast, LOL

By pirate standards, the guy's a saint! Ha ha. It's probably some sort of reflection on my character that I love this character, but I'm okay with that. ;)
Well I just finished this book while on my trip. I adored it. It is a great book. I loved Rhys. He is very appealling to me, but then again I love Barrons and Rhys is a teddy bear near that one. Mina is awesome. I love her dearly. She is my kind of heroine. I can't say enough about this book and the main couple and I have to go enjoy my trip. I will be back with more comments when I am back home and not on the iphone. 5 stars!!!!
Hooray! I'm so glad you liked it. I was guessing you would, but you never know. Happy New Year, hon! Hope you're having a good time on your trip! *hugs*
Happy new year lovelies! Thanks Galla, I'm having fun, I hope you did too. I did love the book as I knew I would, sincewe have such similar tastes.
Missie, I'm so happy you are reading it too. Are you enjoying it? And are you in love with Rhys yet? I know I am. ;)
Do you girls know if there will be more book in the series? And if so, wil they feature Mina and Rhys or another couple?
*hugs her girls*
*cheers* Looking forward to your review!Vampster, on Meljean Brook's website, she says the next Iron Seas novel will focus on "Lady Corsair and a dead guy (zombie?)."
WOOP WOOP! Bes like all kindda happy right now.HAPPY NEW YEAR LADIES!
Have you guys read the short story of iron seas yet?
short story? What? Where can we find it?Okay. Still reading, but question:
Who do we imagine as the Iron Duke?
At first mention of hawk nose, Adrien Brody came to mind for me, which is not bad at all. ;)
Missie wrote: "short story? What? Where can we find it? "It's Anthology Burning Up It's not about Rhys though. A little bit about Lady Corsair in there but mostly about Mad Machen(Eben) and Ivy. Personally I prefer Eben over Rhys *shifty eyes*

Lol. It's Fox. The one who jumped out of the air ship in the Zombieland.
I really hope they get a better cover for Heart Of Steel.
The moobs in the cover gives different kind of vibe. o_O
Yeah, I'm not a big fan of the cover for this one. I think they had to cut out most of the model's face 'cause he really doesn't look anything like the Iron Duke. If I had to guess, I think that dude on the cover is probably blond, lol.
I think there was a picture of the model in Meljean's site. Iron Seas page header use to have his head... now, I guess they cut his head off. lol.

AHHHH JOHN!!! *dies*
Galla wrote: "Oooh, I like the image, though! What do you think of Stephanie Jacobsen for Mina?
"
Oh yay. She is very pretty. Could totally work for Mina.
Inspired by the Iron Duke and unable to get him out of my head, I watched (the new) Sherlock Holmes, The Duchess, and P&P (BBC and new one) back to back! That is a lot of TV for me in one shot. Its like bugs have invaded my brain. What next?
*longing sigh*
I love mood viewing! If I ever hear that a movie version of the actual book is in the works, I might let out a bona fide whoop.
I'd host a grito contest, in which I'd probably be the only participant. LOLAs it is, I'm pretty bummed that The Iron Duke is not on audio book. I'd really love to listen to it, if done right.
If they make a movie out of this book, I hereby pledge to participate in your grito contest AND provide audio evidence of my participation!I didn't even realize there was no audio version of this book yet. It might be a difficult way to experience the book for the first time--I know I was flipping back and forth & bookmarking often to piece together bits of the mystery & world--but I'd love to listen to it now.
*snickersnorts* Now I'm wondering what I can do to entice you into providing audio evidence of a grito just because.
And yeah, it has struck me as very odd that none of MB's books are on audio. She also has that Guardian series that seems to be popular, but not even those are available as audiobooks.

Smittens, I finished the novella from Burning Up last night/this morning, and you're right, it's excellent! I'm not so sure about this preferring Eben to Rhys business, though. ;)

You did!! *squeeee* I loved Eben and Ivy's bunk sharing business. Totally had me grinning the whole time.
I think I prefer both!! ;)
I think I prefer both!! ;) "Oh, you would go there, you saucy minx! You and I both know that's too much man-pirate in one room. Too many chiefs. The growling alone would cause a ruckus.
I wish there was more about Eben. It's hard to choose between the two, woman! BTW I was going through Iron Duke again, totally loled the part where Mina tells Rhys about patient sticking in a candle stick. lolol
AH wrote: "Wow! Those photos make the man. #15 looks like a good Rhys."Yeah, he's just ridiculously good-looking. His RL wife is ridiculously good-looking, too. I think they have special combined hotness powers.
His name is Gilles Marini. I think his big break was an outdoor shower scene in the Sex & the City movie. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1694302/
*squee* Just got this message from Meljean Brook:
"Audiobooks are a possibility, especially if the series becomes more popular -- in most cases, it's simply a matter of selling the audio rights, but the audiobook publishers won't buy the rights unless they know that sales will be sufficient to recover the costs. So if Heart of Steel does well in book form, the chances of selling other formats will probably increase. I've got my fingers crossed!"
That's promising! I'll keep my fingers crossed, too. This one would be great with a good performer narrating.

*squee heard round the world* This just in:
Hi Missie,
My editor just told me the Iron Seas will be released in audiobook later this year. I was shocked as you can imagine, but immediately thought of your e-mail, so I thought I'd let you know: the novella, The Iron Duke, and Heart of Steel will all be available. The anticipated release date is about the same time that the printed version of Heart of Steel will be released -- so October/November of this year.
I hope your week is going well!
My best,
Meljean

You really love those Geico commercials, don't you? LOL
I've only read half of a cyberpunk story before (couldn't finish it) and I was instantly repelled from the genre. Too icky for me. Especially since recently I was talking to a student who took a class which incorporated Second Life and said people just use it to have sex all the time with strangers. LOL Not judging, just not for me.
So, five starts huh? If only I could get through that beginning. The few reviews I have read for the book have all loved it, and have all swooned over Rhys. I never got an indication, before now, that he might be unappealing to some. Super curious now. Will give it another go soon. I love me a well developed world to get completely lost in.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts but not spoiling anything for me Galla.
