The story of dirt-grubbing primitives on a planet where seasons last centuries.

It wasn't bad, per se; in fact, some of the travelogue-ish sections of the first part of the book (which struck me as reminiscent of Dead Earth books like Wolfe's New Sun series, which I at first thought was the direction this was going) were decent. By and large, though, I never really connected with any of the characters and the setting didn't really grab me. As an added quibble, the technological advances seemed more based on plot-convenience that any sort of natural progression.
