This book managed to have the romantic tension of a victorian novel combined with page-turning thriller quality of a Michael Crichton book. Plus, the characters were all delicious - especially the unsypathetic and evil ones. I laughed out loud every time the nasty uncle came into the picture, even though he was just awful. It's worth the length, but make sure you don't do what I did and "accidentally" read the plot on Wikipedia.....
