All the President's Men
by Carl Bernstein, Bob Woodward
by Carl Bernstein, Bob Woodward
Back in the day, I devoured everything Watergate, and this was the touchstone book, the account by the reporters who alone doggedly pursued the story till it broke, and broke the Nixon White House.
I still think their job was necessary and brave, but in a way, "Woodstein" warped journalism. Suddenly all journalists deemed themselves "investagative journalists" and treated every story as if it were Watergate, to the detriment of society and journalism. Until they were coopted by money and fame and ceased being journalists and became celebrities...like "Woodstein."
The Fourth Estate isn't as much at fault as the politicians, but their hands aren't clean either. None of which is about this book, of course. Rants R Us.
