Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
I realize the pointlessness of writing a review for this book, and yet here I go...
If your only exposure to "Pride and Prejudice" consists of having the vaguest ideas of the plot outline, no one would blame you for not wanting to read it. Jane Austen has a way of turning the most retarded story into a classic with her ability to create realistic, fallible, diverse characters. All you have to do is look at her other works: every one of them follows the same basic premise, but each heroine is distinct. Fanny could not find a more perfect opposite than Emma; Elizabeth Bennet is probably one of the most sympathetic characters in all literature, while Catherine Morland is a pitiable little fool.
Elizabeth is what makes this my favorite of all Austen's works. Being the stupid girl I am, I fancy myself quite like Elizabeth, as I expect do 98% of women who have read this book. I think this is evidence of the author's genius: just as Sylvia Plath did in "The Bell Jar,"...more
