A significant step down from Greg Pak's stunning science fiction odyssey in Planet Hulk, World War Hulk takes elements of the former story and sets them in conflict with the famous Marvel universe. I should have been an easy story with a dozen earth-shattering battles, yet almost every conflict seems to end too quickly and with neither drama nor accuracy to the abilities of the earthly characters. Even the alien characters seem far more powerful (and often, far more shallow) than they did in Planet Hulk. There are a few clever turns and applications of alien technology, but World War Hulk largely lacks the depth of character and development of Pak's original groundbreaking storyline. The saving grace is a truly impressive final battle that provided me with a greater emotional catharsis than I'd felt in years.
