The Finkler Question
by Howard Jacobson
by Howard Jacobson
Really really really great. hard to put down. touching and funny. unexpectedly challenging. presents a difficult topic in a hitting and fearless fashion. empowered me with a nuanced perspective and vocabulary with which to challenge prevailing or simplistic notions of the Jewish identity. every time I put it down I had a strange yearning to call my grandmother, to remember and to be close.

oo thanks for the review. I bought this on my kindle after it won the booker but then got discouraged when i read on some leftist websites about how howard jacobson was some sort of jewish chauvinist who hated jews who criticise israel, but i will now give it another shot!

ok but don't blame me if you find out he is a jewish chauvinist who hates jews who criticise isreal... no, that's not true. he's way too much of an anthropologist for that. there are no bad guys in this book. you should read it anyway so then when you get home we can talk at length about it.
