This book started off really slow and then picked up in the middle/end. What I didn't explain in the first review, is that in this series, commoners know about magicians as the magicians run the government. For a lot of people, this system works, but not for the members of the Resistance. We heard about a few of their exploits in the first book and Nathaniel/John Mandrake's run-ins with them, however in this book we are really introduced to the group and why it was started, as well as how each individual member was recruited. The focus is on Kitty Jones and how she came to hate magicians. John Mandrake is now 14 and working for the Dept of Internal Affairs, though he is despised by most of his co-workers for his age and inexperience. Bartimaeus is re-summoned by Mandrake and put into a 6 week service. Something is terrorizing London and the magicians are stumped as to what it is. Is it really the Resistance or something more sinister?
