This early Janet Evanovich romance was really cute and enjoyable. Oil tycoon and AM radio station owner Steve Crow falls for overworked graduate student Daisy Adams, his employee and newly promoted traffic reporter. Though the book is set in Washington DC and its surrounding neighborhoods, Burg residents from Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series would feel right at home. Daisy has a penchant for clumsily and inadvertently getting into trouble and stopping criminals in their tracks. This causes Steve to hire a bodyguard for Daisy, only to have Daisy hire a seventy year old woman with tight grey curls and a big black handbag containing a .45 Magnum long barrel. You know you're looking at an early incarnation of Grandma Mazur even before she pulls up in her huge, old, powder blue Cadillac and threatens to shoot a man in his privates. Even Steve himself is an early peek at what Joe Morelli would eventually become: a man with a home of his own, slightly domestic with an eye toward settling down and owning a dog named Bob. Everything that makes the Plum books a hit makes this a great book, but with enough differences that you feel you're reading a great book and not a first draft of a Plum novel.
