This arrived today, so Jane's adventures with Lord Byron will have to wait a couple days. I hope this is one of Shreve's good ones. A few have disappointed, but I'm still an ardent fan.
I liked "Rescue." Thinking about the books by Shreve that have ranked highly on my reader's list, one common denominator is that the book has fewer characters and more depth. So, like "Where or When" (my absolute Shreve favorite), "Rescue" focuses tightly on one family: Sheila, Webster, and Rowan.
Part of the book is devoted to the meeting and building love between Sheila and Webster. They are quite the opposites, with his organized, methodical life and her free spirit.
Part of the book is devoted to their marriage, the first swooning joy, the baby years of no sleep and increasing tension, and wondering what happened to all that swept you off your feet in the first place.
The last part of the book focues on their daughter, Rowan. Without giving away plot points and spoilers, Rowan is a teen with a bad attitude, an attitude that astounds everyone around her, for she has seemed such a good and happy child.
The book races along (I read it in a day), and I found it a well-plotted and emotionally satisfying read.
