I don't know why I found and still find this story so compelling. Despite it's place as a classic, it definitely has a few glaring flaws when compared to Heights and other English literature. Yet, after all is said and done, Charlotte Bronte's voice is her voice and, despite the simple Gothic romance facade and "heaving bodice" action on offer, there there is a unique psychological substance and subtlety in Bronte's portrayal of Jane's struggles to reconcile her ideals with her desires and the different manifestations of Victorian society she's placed in.
