This book is less a novel than it is a treatise or an elaborate lecture. The layering and interconnected tales are interesting but also leave less space for exposition of the characters, making it so they weren't much more than props to hold up Kundera's ideas. This isn't really a problem, because his ideas are interesting and worth considering at length, but I had no previous knowledge or experience of Kundera, so I was expecting a story. There were parts of the book that were funny and others that were erotic, but overall I was bemused as opposed to intrigued. It was an enjoyable read because it was so short.
