Felt like revisiting my "yute." You really can't read it quite the same way as an adult as you did as a kid. It's a good yarn, but you're so aware of how the stereotypes act to reinforce the "received notions" that support the English class system. Damn that liberal-leaning higher education!:)

Amanda Isn't that the truth...re-reading a beloved childhood favorite can sort of tarnish the picture you had of the book. It's so likely that racism, sexism or other 'isms' were there but completely went un-noticed.
Still, it's possible to enjoy them in a different way.

Anthony Thanks for note. I'm kind of surprised anybody actually read something I've posted, but definitely gratified.

I've had similar experience re-reading a couple of other childhood favorites.

Chris Rogers I'm going to start saying "yute" now whenever I can. just a heads up

Becky I dont know, I've read dissertations on Long John Silver, easily the deepest character on the ship. He puts the "Gentleman" into Gentleman of Fortune. Plus Hawkins is supposed to be, what, fourteen? Show me a fourteen year old that isn't stereotypical :D
