This is a strange little memoir. Barber's prose is charming, and her stories of rising from the middle class to British literary stardom were interesting to this aspiring writer, but I'm not sure this is a book I would recommend to anyone who is not interested in how the inner-workings of the glamorous bygone days of print magazine writing. While the book is described as a memoir on its back cover, the total lack of reflection and the narrative reliance on name-dropping give it the feel of an old-fashioned autobiography. If this book really does represent the best memoir-writing coming out of Britain at the moment, then the Brits have a lot of catching up to do.
