This isn't Gemmell's best book, but it is his most fun. Jarek Mace is no Hero. Nobody knows that more than him. Everything he does is for his own self interest, and yet his legend grows and grows.

When I read this book, it made me consider people like Abraham Lincoln. Legends who have been built up by virtue of time, and success. They are larger than life, and yet Lincoln was no God. He was a man with faults and problems. How does such a man become so great? Gemmell indicates it is equal parts accident, fate, and coincidence.
