it gave me more insight into the world of my ancestors than anything else I've read.

I'm immensely sympathetic to Isaac Bashevis Singer because I think his heart is in the right place with his internal psychological ponderings / neuroses / maniacal impulses and his creepy, haunting images (like Shosha not changing). I feel like his writing falls flat sometimes, or doesn't manage to evoke the magic it so desperately wants to portray.
