Amazing and touching book.

Culturally relevant too, in a sad/creepy way. I'm not sure if the trend is about monsters capturing and locking up children, or about captives finding escape and liberation, but it definitely explores the much-asked 'what was that like?!' question in a behind-the-scenes way.

I find it odd that a lot of the reviews criticize the book for not being 'literary' enough. Personally, I thought the ability to accurately and beautifully capture a 5-year old's thoughts so uniquely and translate it into an interesting story to be an extremely successful literary accomplishment.

The question that stops Ma - 'would Jack have been better off if Ma had the guts to give him up for adoption?' is a very haunting question. Can abandonment ever be justified?
