I read this following the epic Band of Brother series by Hanks and Spielberg.

It is a wonderful book that focusses, quite brilliantly, on the wartime exploits of the very special Easy Company. The book takes you on the journey from the formation of the company through to the end of the war. It tells personal stories of heroism, bravery and misfortune. It takes you through the wartime experience of individuals as they grow from civilians into elite soldiers before finally returning the heroes back to civilian life.

This is a very easy read and does not require any specific military/war knowladge to enjoy it.
