I am tempted to get this for my new husband. This dog is happy living alone, making jam in the summer and knitting in the winter. But sometimes he gets lonely. Then a mouse shows up one winter day, and they have a great time. There's a snow storm, so the dog invites the mouse to stay overnight. But the mouse snores like crazy (like my husband). The next day the mouse makes breakfast, getting jam all over the place, then naps in the yarn, making a mess (like me). The dog gets mad and sends the mouse packing--but then he realizes he misses him. So he asks him to come back. The last sentence in the book is perfect: "And Jack learned that no matter how big a mess Walter made, it was worth it to have his friend around." Sigh.
