Just as his masterpiece THE HOURS, this new Michael Cunningham novel was at one a literary feast and a driving narrative page-turner. I really wanted to find out more, ever more. AND, I wanted to linger over sentences, perfect turns of phrases, and gasp-inducing resonances between character, literature, history, culture and the emotional terrain of how we live today (as the NY Times so blandly puts it). Situated in the upper middle class art and literary milieu of lofts and galleries and rich people's gardens and peopled with cultured and educated adults and teens, this short, almost novella-length tale got under my skin. The human frailties of the lead characters is a stand-in for a kind of spiritual malaise that is oddly uplifting, and not at all maudlin or victimish. And, those sentences! (reading it on the kindle app also underlines those that other readers wanted to remember. First time that feature made sense to me).
