This book starts off with a very intriguing premise - in 1893 an entire mining town in the mountains of Colorado disappears without a trace. In 2009, a group goes to the mining town all with their own agendas - which become clearer as the book progresses.

I did like the book, I have to say that. I really loved reading about Abandon (the mining town) in 1893, and learning about the people. The whole setting is very creepy - which I enjoy in a suspense novel. The problem is that pretty soon the action is so fast and furious it's hard to keep up. You read the words "snow" and "ice" so many times that soon your eyes glaze over the passages where they are climbing or running or whatever, just to get to the next part of the story. It all starts to mesh together. The author would've done well to edit some of the action scenes and gotten to the conclusion faster.

A few of the scenes in this book are quite horrific, more so than the average thriller I read. I won't go into details because I don't like spoilers, but at least one scene I am going to have a hard time getting out of my mind because of the sheer cruelty of the situation.

It was still a pretty good, but it got to be a little far-fetched. Like I said before, if the author had cut it down just a little bit, it would've been a much better story and I wouldn't have felt relief at finally turning the last page.
