In the off-Earth worlds, there is the Culture: benevolent masters of much of the planets and a powerful controller of inter-culture norms.

Lededje is chattel to her owner, best friend to her father before he betrayed him and took all of his property. Her last attempt to escape succeeds, but not in the way she expected.

Banks is very good and fully realizing future worlds that bring forward the foibles and patterns of this one, with enough sci-fi to keep most geeks happy.

It's a race to see what the outcome of a brutal war in the realm will be.
