I was intrigued by the review in The New Yorker, and anything about Alexander is to me fascinating. Lyon's audacity in writing from Aristotle's point of view was also interesting, and I confess, I did read it right down and enjoyed it whilst doing so. On the other hand ... not sure this is entirely successful. It felt more like a sketch, rather than a deep and rich novel of fully realized characters and experiences, and several little things kept popping me out (e.g., why "heels down" as an example of excellent horsemanship in an age of no-stirrups, when any classical Greek depiction of horsemen shows the opposite??). Mary Renault's Fire From Heaven is a far more satisfying read, in this readers opinion.
