Black Wings by Christina Henry

This book initially reminded me of a harder edged 'Dead like me', so here's a quick run down of things Madeline Black and Georgia Lass have in common:

- They're both Reapers, collecting souls of the newly deceased and escort them to the great big "whatever".

- The business of death as a lame bureaucracy related gig, makes for lots of great dark humor. I especially like that in this book they were referred to as 'agents', it fit the morbid IRS feel perfectly.

- They both fell into the job through fate. Being an agent of death is passed on from parent to child upon death. So if your Mum kicks the bucket, congrats kid your hired.

-They're obligated to perform the service, that makes normal working hours impossible. But aren't paid, so have to find quirky side jobs/methods to make ends meat.

- They both have pushy Bosses. Though George's indulgent often fatherly Rube seems preferable, to Maddy gorgeous but pain in the ass JB.

That's where the similarities end. This book could have easily continued to follow suit with what I expected. Maddy might of uncovered some conspiracy, recruited her kooky friends into the investigation, experienced some supernatural amateur sleuth hi-jinks, became part of an ever convenient love triangle, and eventually saved the day a little wiser for the experience. Now despite my glib summary, if that's the way the book had gone I would've been a happy camper. But it wouldn't have left a lasting impression.

Black wings on the other hand is like 2 books in one. I really thought I knew where 'it' was going. But boy was I wrong because monstrous nephilim, the Grand Poobah Lucifer himself, possession, a creepy almost incestuous fallen angel tree, and shifty/intricate demon court politics in hell...er I mean the Kingdom of Morningstar; was not it. But hot damn was it awesome.

I especially liked the way Lucifer and the other fallen angels are portrayed. They're neither Mr.Rogers friendly uber seducers, nor do they seem mindlessly evil/cruel. And instead are frighteningly non-human in their thinking/behavior, extremely domineering, tolerate no disrespect/slights, and yet are capable of affection/moments of kindness (well....to a degree lol). Add to that, at times the prose was downright decadent.

Two thousand miles had passed beneath her feet, and many villages, as she left the green lands and walked into the dessert. she walked, searching for her lover, every step bringing her closer to ash and cloud covered gray mountains - The Forbidden Lands. She walked, always hearing his voice in her ear: "come to me. Come to me. Come to me." She did not care where her steps led so long as he was there at the end of it all

I liked the 1st 40% of Black Wings, but the latter 60% was LOVE. IMO a fantastic series debut, I can't wait to see how this story progresses. I'll leave ya, with one last quote.

I had no magic, and then all of a sudden I felt something enormous surge out of me, like a bomb going off. There was this burst of white light that sort of burned through my skin. He dropped me, and when I looked up at him I saw whatever had come out of me had melted away his skin

If that's not badass, I don't know what is. = )

Ithlilian I'm definitely looking forward to reading Black Wings-I've heard good things.

Mistress ~ ♠ Mistral's Kiss ♠ ~ (Mist) So have I = ). Been meaning to read it for a while, but kept getting distracted. My fingers are crossed that it'll live up to my expectations.

Nisha good enough for me. I loved Dead Like Me.

Catherine Great review! I really liked this one as well.

Mistress ~ ♠ Mistral's Kiss ♠ ~ (Mist) Thanks Catherine, me too dude. I'm auto buying the next book. I can't wait to see how her "visits" are going to go.

(view spoiler)[Do you think Jb is Gabe's bro? or at least of that sort of lineage? (hide spoiler)]

Catherine (view spoiler)[That never even occurred to me. Hmmm, that would be interesting if it turned out like that.

I hope the author doesn't make JB a serious love interest. I'm enjoying the rare lack of love triangle! (hide spoiler)]

Mistress ~ ♠ Mistral's Kiss ♠ ~ (Mist) (view spoiler)[ Yeah, despite being willing to listen to her warnings, JB was too fast on the uptake nephilim fighting. And that stick thingy he was using, reminded me of evil step bro's charm from mother dearest. Also his day and night switcheroo with her is mighty convenient. I figure he's either a friendly mole keeping tabs on her from some interested party ( maybe Michael) or villainous to some degree. Not to mention btwn Gabe & the snooty fiance, he'd have to have something major up his sleeve to compete with the big boys.

I enjoyed the lack of love triangle too, but I don't know how long it's gonna last. Mz. Henry threw me for such a loop plot wise, I wouldn't be surprised if all the men in her life do extreme 180's. I like Gabriel a lot, which surprises me since he's awfully beta. But emotionally he's a handful, and his loyalties elsewhere are going to be highly problematic. (hide spoiler)]

Catherine (view spoiler)[Good points! I'm really curious to see where this is all going.

I'm nervous about Gabriel's loyalties as well. He's in a veeeery tight spot and it's going to be hard for Maddy to accept not coming first when her daddy lays down the law.

I was pretty pissed on her behalf that her father could waltz into her life and make decisions like that for her. I'd say "who the hell does he think he is?" but who he is holds a lot of clout. :\ (hide spoiler)]

Mistress ~ ♠ Mistral's Kiss ♠ ~ (Mist) (view spoiler)[ Thanks *curtseys*. Yeah, if things go badly he has a lot more to lose. Any disobedience or failure could end his life at best.

I loved the high handedness myself lol, though I hope she finds a way to go her own way. It always irks me to no end that these "heap big monsters" are all so willing to humor the smart ass scruffy heroines verbal jabs. They're hilarious and all, and I wouldn't be content if she wasn't spunky enough to make them; but it always seems highly unlikely the way the Spooky muckity mucks respond with annoyed tolerance. In one of my fav erotica books the hero is this sociopath ( and telepathic) vamp and the heroine is a human agent for a vampire clan. She sleeps with him to save her life. They had reached a sense of tenderness post coital; until he decides to "keep" her. When she freaks internally, he openly informs her if she runs he'll hunt her down. ( there's a point to me mentioning all this I swear lol)

Anywhoo, when he's trying to understand her terror at his decision. He asks if it was his threats. she responds:

“No. vampires threaten me all the time. I don’t think
they know how to make a request without adding
the usual ‘or else’ clause. It’s good to know where I
stand, where the lines are drawn. I know I’m
nothing but food should I disappoint, so I don’t mind the reminder not to trust the lions just because they have not eaten me yet.”

I seriously get off on the reminders that Lucifer and Fallen Angel Daddy (that sounds like a bad porn name lmao); are clearly lions. = )

I wonder what her new supervisor will be like.

Ooh and I almost forgot. What's up with her being a virgin? lol I found that odd as hell.

Catherine (view spoiler)[I liked them being lions too, I was just mad on her behalf. :) Because I would have to choke down some vile words if someone thought they could walk into my life and arbitrarily decide things for me. What would burn even worse would be the realization that yes, they can tell me what to do and there's nothing I can do about it without being sneaky or clever.

I like it though because I think it's going to add some great tension and a nice overall arc to follow. I dislike when every bad guy in the world backs down from the heroine for now apparent reason either. I want to see the main character take their lumps and scrape themselves back off the floor to carry on. That's a huge reason why I love the Harry Dresden series so much.

I have no clue why the heroine needs to be a virgin. I can see how she would end up that way by being so isolated, but I don't see why it's important. I was kind of perplexed by everyone sniffing her virginity out. (hide spoiler)]

I really love this new spoiler tag because now I can have huge conversations without worrying about accidentally spoiling someone as they try to skip the comment I marked as ***SPOILERS***.

Mistress ~ ♠ Mistral's Kiss ♠ ~ (Mist) Yeah it's grand. I feel like Bond, Mist Bond. lol
